Overview

Five years ago, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class set standards in the MPV segment with its design, value appeal, comfort as well as safety and assistance systems. The facelift builds upon these core values and thus enhances the attractiveness of the biggest member of the Stuttgart-based passenger car family.

Trim Levels

Sport

The V-Class Sport is a haven of space and comfort with dynamic flair: it features 18" alloy wheels in 5-twin-spoke design as well as LED headlamps with intelligent Light System and LED tail lamps.

Inside, you'll find black napper leather with a matt anthracite wave look trim to match the sporty theme. Ambient lighting allows you to choose between three colours to suit your mood. The sport offers Agility Control comfort suspension and Active Parking Assist with reversing camera as standard.

AMG Line

A combination of AMG features and high-quality details help to enhance the AMG Line's appeal. Exterior equipment that distinguishes the look includes 19"alloy wheels and an AMG spoiler lip, plus AMG front and rear bumpers with chrome details and AMG side sill panels. Inside, napper leather seats are matched with carbon-look trim and chrome air vents.

Exclusive

When it comes to high tech, the V-Class Exclusive is a grand performer. A 360 deg camera eases parking, while the Driving Assistance package adds to exceptional safety standards. Passengers in the first row enjoy the comfort of luxury seats, complete with reclining and massage functions, climatisation and footrests. A refrigerator and Burmester surround sound system complete the stunning V-Class Exclusive.

Behind The Wheel

The new V-Class presence has an impression of breadth, this is thanks to its newly designed bumper with striking cooling air intake and the diamond structure of the radiator grille. Available as an option, the AMG Line features a new diamond radiator grille with chrome pins for a yet more sporty appearance. New paint colours in graphite grey metallic and selenite grey metallic expand the spectrum of popular black/white tones. Equally new is the steel blue paint finish. With the new, optional colour hyacinth red metallic, the new V-Class also makes an especially emotive statement. At the same time, four new light-alloy wheel designs ensure a striking, avantgarde appearance. They include 5-twin-spoke 17-inch light-alloy wheels painted in black with a high-sheen finish as well as 18-inch light-alloy wheels in tremolite grey with a high-sheen finish and 5-twin-spoke design, or in black with a high-sheen finish and 5-spoke design. At the upper end of the new wheels portfolio are black-painted 19-inch 10-spoke light-alloy wheels with a high-sheen finish.

The interior of the new V-Class follows the trend of modernity and clarity. The V-Class facelift presents itself with new air vents in a more sporty turbine look as well as new dials in the instrument cluster. Thanks to the reduced design, drivers can orientate themselves much more simply. The new upholstery and equipment colour tartufo nappa leather makes a modern and elegant statement. With Lugano leather and nappa leather, each available in black and silk beige, plus Santos black fabric, a total of six different upholsteries in light and dark colours is available. Modern and elegant can also be used to describe the new trim element in twin-stripe look which is used on the instrument panel and side paneling. The trim elements in the piano lacquer, ebony wood, carbon fibre and brushed aluminium looks remain.

As part of the facelift, rear passengers can enjoy a special comfort feature. Optionally available luxury seats for the first rear row pamper occupants with reclining and back massage functions as well as air conditioning, as in the S-Class. A journey in the new V-Class – for instance if used as a VIP shuttle - thus turns into a spa like treatment.

With the facelift, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class is equipped with the four-cylinder OM 654 diesel engine in three output variants: the V 220 d with 163 hp and 380 Nm of torque; the V 250 d with 140 190 hp and 440 Nm of torque, and – as the new top performer in the segment – the V 300 d with 239 hp and 500 Nm of torque. In the acceleration phase, the V 300 d can briefly deliver an additional 30 Nm of torque ("over torque") in addition to its 500 Nm of torque.

The new engine generation is even more efficient and clean and offers further improved noise and vibration characteristics. It is pleasantly quiet inside the vehicle and annoying vibrations have been reduced.

Among the innovative characteristics of the new engine generation are the combination of an aluminium housing and steel pistons, the stepped recess combustion process and the NANOSLIDE® cylinder wall coating for reduced in-engine friction. The efficiency of these measures is obvious from the fuel saving of around 13 percent for the new V 250 d compared to its predecessor.2

The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission is also available for the first time with the facelift. The particularly comfortable and efficient automatic torque converter transmission replaces the 7G-TRONIC and is standard equipment for the V 300 d. It is optional for the V 220 d. You can use the DYNAMIC SELECT switch to select the drive programs "Comfort" and "Sport" and thus influence the gear shifting characteristics. Alternatively, "Manual" mode allows you to shift manually using the DIRECT SELECT steering wheel paddles.

All engine variants of the new V-Class come with rear-wheel drive as standard, 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive is available as an option. This enables it to negotiate a wide range of surfaces with ease. The vehicle height remains under the two-metre mark even when equipped with all-wheel drive. The Mercedes-Benz MPV therefore loses none of its day-to-day usability and can still fit in regular garages as well as multi-storey and underground car parks without problems.

The V-Class is now even safer, with Crosswind Assist, which helps the driver to keep the vehicle on track even in the case of gusting crosswinds, and the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST, the V-Class redefined the safety standards in its segment five years ago. The facelift continues to build on this position. For example, Active Brake Assist, which is available for the first time, can detect the risk of a collision with a vehicle ahead, and initially initiates a visual and acoustic warning. If the driver responds, it builds up brake pressure appropriate to the situation. If there is no response, the system actively assists with evasive and braking manoeuvres. In urban traffic,Active Brake Assist also reacts to stationary obstacles or crossing pedestrians.

High beam Assist Plus is another new safety feature. When in high beam mode, it supports the driver with a consistently optimised illumination of the road. In the event of vehicles in front or oncoming traffic, the LEDs of the main-beam module are partially deactivated, creating a U-shaped cut-out in the cone of light. The remaining areas of the roadway continue to be illuminated with the main-beam headlamps (partial main beam).

Practicality and Boot Space

The V- Class is the top of its game in the luxury MPV segment. The extra long wheel-base offers an S-Class level of comfort combined with acres of space, but with the practicality of a saloon car, which means it will still fit in a garage or multi-story carpark. Their is enough room to carry 7 passengers and all the luggage making the V-Class probably the most practical luxury MPV available.

The Verdict...

Top of its game, the face lifted V-Class has pushed the boundaries even further, with the addition of new safety assist systems and the refinement of drive trains. It makes a great family MPV in the short wheel base variant, but if your job is moving VIP's around then the extra long wheel base is ideal - It certainly gets our vote.
